Miniature Zebu
Bos Indicus
Picture

The breed standards for Miniature Zebu state that they should stand less than 42” behind the hump. Like all Bos I  ndicus cattle, Miniature Zebu have large ears and a hump on their backs. They come in a variety of colors  including red, grey and black. When they are born they are all red.

Zebu are known for their hardiness. They tend to be more disease and parasite resistant than Bos taurus cattle, but are thought not to yield as tender meat. Miniature Zebu are traditionally used for meat, milk and draft purposes. In the U.S. these cattle are mostly kept as pets.

There are two main species of domestic cattle, Bos taurus and Bos indicus. Most of the cattle that are found in the United States are from the Bos taurus species. Many of these cattle breeds originated in Europe. Most Bos indicus breeds originated in Asia and Africa. These are some of the oldest breeds in the world. The first of these cattle are thought to have been domesticated as long ago as 3000 BC.
While there are many breeds of Bos indicus, or Zebu, cattle in Asia there are relatively few in the U.S.. They are generally categorized as Brahman cattle. The Miniature Zebu is a smaller version of these Brahmans. Miniature Zebu are also known as Nadudana cattle, which means “small cattle” in Hindi.
